The Boys’ Brigade Report 2010/11

A warm welcome is extended to everyone attending our 78th Annual Display, and I hope you will enjoy our programme. I would extend a special welcome to our Guest of Honour, Mr Denis Lennon, and his wife Alice. Denis served in this company for forty one years, being leader in charge of the Junior section. We are delighted that Denis and his wife Alice are able to be with us this evening.

Our session commenced on Tuesday 21st September, with 26 boys in the Company Section, 14 in the Junior Section, 17 Anchor Boys and 11 officers. On Sunday 14th November one Junior Section and two Company Section boys laid a wreath at the War Memorial Hall. Our Joint enrolment service was held on Sunday 21st November at 6pm and was conducted by Rev Abraham, with praise being led by members of BB and GB. This was followed by light refreshments in the hall.

We wish to thank the Boys who collected and the parents and friends who contributed to BB week. This is a valuable source of funding and we depend on your generosity to help finance the work amongst boys. We would also like to thank everyone who contributed to our clothes collection; we received £215.00 from this effort.

The Down Battalion District Service was held last Sunday 20th March in Ballynahinch. We would like to thank all Junior Section and Company Section boys who attended.

I would also like to congratulate one of our officers, Mrs Elizabeth McCorriston, and her husband Marcus, on the birth of their baby daughter - Lena Jayne. Elizabeth worked with the Junior section up to the Christmas break, and we look forward to her being back with us soon. A big thanks also to Mr Roy Hamilton and Miss Wendy Murphy who have helped out very ably this year in the Junior Section.

Anchor Boys and team games

Anchor Boys meet each Thursday from 6.30-7.30pm, The weekly programme is made up of a Bible story, team and competitive games and craft work.

We had visits this year from the Ark Open Farm, ASSISSI Animal Rescue Centre and a Christian puppet show.

We participated in Down Battalion activities - indoor sports, duster hockey, officer training, colouring in competition and district service. Our duster hockey team - Ethan Dodd, Matthew McKee, Isaac Pentland, Jamie Rice and Charlie Taylor - achieved 3rd place in the Battalion competition, which was a great achievement. Colouring in competition winners were P! & P2 section - Daniel Spratt and P3& P4 section - Ethan Dodd. The attendance of the boys this year was excellent and we had four boys with full attendance.

I would like to thank all the Anchor Boy Officers, helpers, parents and boys for their commitment and help throughout the year.

Rosemary Cuffey, Lieut in Charge

It Was ONLY fun - Really!!!!!!!!!!

The Junior Section: Juniors meet on Tuesday nights from 6.30 to 7.45pm. This year there were a total of 14 Juniors, divided into three squads. Throughout the year, boys competed against each other to win points for their squad. Competition between squads was fierce!

The attendance this year has been exceptional, and the boys have been very enthusiastic in all activities. Each night the boys participated in Bible stories, this year our theme was “Men of Faith”. Our focus was on men in the Bible, and how we too can grow into men of faith. Other activities included games, crafts, cooking and badge work. Four boys also represented the company at the Down Battalion parade and church service in Ballynahinch.

Throughout the year we have had a number of special guests. These included Andy Kyriacou from Ulster Rugby, and Craig Peacock from the Belfast Giants. The boys (and officers) enjoyed a trip to Space Quest in Downpatrick, a Belfast Giants ice hockey match, a trip to Ravenhill to watch

an Ulster Rugby match and a visit to a fire station.

I would like to give a special word of thanks to my helpers Elizabeth McCorriston, Roy Hamilton and Wendy Murphy. Thanks also to Raymond, Colin and Matthew for their support and encouragement throughout the year. I would also like to thank Rachael McMillan from the University of Ulster Sports Academy for her help with games.

Finally, I would like to thank all parents for sending their boys along so faithfully each week. We hope that each boy has enjoyed their year with us.

Chloe Abraham, Lieut in Charge

Company Section preparing for Drill Down

The Company Section meets each Tuesday from 8pm - 9.30pm. The weekly programme has followed the form of previous years with Inspection, Bible Class, Drill and PE/Recreational activities.

A number of special activities were organised throughout the year including a night at Eddie Irvine karting in Bangor, trips to Ulster Rugby at Ravenhill and Belfast Giants at the Odysey Arena, Belfast. We also had a very enjoyable question and answer session with Andy Kyriacou from the Ulster Rugby team and a fitness evening with Craig Peacock of the Belfast Giants.

Next Tuesday evening - 29th March - the Company Section boys are meeting in the hall for games, at their usual time - 8.00 - 9.30.

We are also planning a family fun day in Delamont Country Park on Saturday 16th April at 3pm. All boys and their families will be made most welcome. We would appreciate if everyone attending could let us know on the week leading up to it, to help us make catering arrangements, as we plan to have a bar- b-que.

This has been another busy session and I would like to thank all my Officers for their hard work throughout the year. I would like to thank Rev Abraham for conducting Bible Class each week and for his encouragement throughout the year, and to say a very big thank you to the boys for their enthusiastic participation each week and their parents for their continued help and support throughout the year.
