The Boys’ Brigade Report 2009/10
Report presented in Programme at Annual Inspection and Report
A warm welcome is extended to everyone attending our 77th Annual Display, and I hope you will enjoy our programme. I would extend a special welcome to our Guest of Honour Mr Ian Patterson and his wife Elizabeth. Ian Patterson is an old boy of the Company and Elizabeth is captain of our Girls Brigade Company.
Our session commenced on Tuesday 15 September, with 26 boys in the Company Section 10 in the Junior Section, 19 Anchor Boys and 11 officers. On Sunday 8 November one Junior Section and two Company Section boys laid a wreath at the War Memorial Hall. Our Joint enrolment service was held on Sunday 15 November at 6pm and was conducted by Rev Abraham with praise being led by members of BB and GB. This was followed by light refreshments in the hall.
We wish to thank the Boys who collected and the parents and friends who contributed to BB week. This is a valuable source of funding and we depend on your generosity to help finance the work amongst boys. We would also like to thank everyone who supported Raymond and James fund raising efforts for Uganda. Almost £6000 was raised and we would say a very big thank you for your support.
The Down Battalion District Service will be held this Sunday 21st March at 3.30pm in Kilkeel We would encourage all Junior Section and Company Section boys to attend. Boys are asked to meet in the square at 1.45pm in full uniform.
I would also like to congratulate Lieutenants Elizabeth McCorriston and James Cuffey on completion of their Officer basic training in January.
At the end of last year’s session, Mr Dennis Lennon informed me that he wished to retire as an officer in the Company. Dennis was a life long member of the Company and had completed 41 years as an officer and was officer in charge of the Junior Section. We would wish to thank Dennis for all his work over the years and wish him a happy retirement.
Anchor Boys report presented in Programme at Annual Inspection and Report
Anchor Boys meet each Thursday from 6.30-7.30pm. The weekly programme is made up of Bible stones, team and competitive games and craft work. In November we had a visit from TACT wildlife Sanctuary, a very successful Christmas party on 17th December and a visit from Ark Open Farm in February.
We participated in Down Battalion activities - indoor sports, duster hockey, officer training and colouring in competition. Our duster hockey team - Ross McClenaghan, Sam McCormick, Ben Rowlatt-McCormick, Christopher Robinson and Joshua Wilson - were very successful gaining 3rd place in the Down Battalion-very well done boys.
I would like to thank all the Anchor Boy Officers, helpers, parents and boys for their commitment and help throughout the year.

The Junior Section: Juniors meet on Tuesday nights from 6.30 to 7.45pm. A typical evening is made up of games, Bible stories, craft and badge work. The attendance this year has been exceptional, and the boys have been very enthusiastic in all activities.
Throughout the year we have had a number of special guests. These included a PSNI road-safety officer on his motorbike, a representative from the Blind Dog association and animals from ARK open farm. The boys (and officers!) also enjoyed a trip to Space Quest in Downpatrick, and to a Belfast Giants ice hockey match.
We were saddened to hear of the retirement of Dennis Lennon from Juniors. We would like to thank Dennis for his many years service to our section and company. I would like to give a special word of thanks to Matthew Cuffey, Raymond McClurg, Colin Dickson and James Cuffey for their continuous support and encouragement. Thanks also to Alan McKee for his help during the year.
Finally, I would like to thank all parents for sending their boys along so faithfully each week. We hope that each boy has enjoyed their year with us!

The Company Section meets each Tuesday from 8pm - 9.30pm. The weekly programme has followed the form of previous years with Inspection, Bible Class, Drill and PE/Recreational activities.
A number of special activities were organised throughout the year including a night at Formula Karting in Newry for boys and parents, a visit from PSN! traffic branch with their motorbikes, a night at ‘Room to Race’, Bangor, a visit from Guide Dogs for the Blind, and a trip to see Belfast Giants.
Next Tuesday 23rd March, some of the Giants will take an evening in the hall from 7.15 to 8.45; this is open to all boys and parents to attend.
We are also planning a family fun day in Delamont Country Park on Saturday 17lh April at 3pm. All boys and their families will be made most welcome. We would appreciate if everyone attending could let us know on the week leading up to it, to help us make catering arrangements, as we plan to have a bar- b-que.
This has been a particularly busy session and I would like to thank all my Officers for their hard work throughout the year. I would like to thank Rev Abraham for conducting Bible Class each week and for his encouragement throughout the year, and to say a very big thank you to the boys for their enthusiastic participation each week and their parents for their continued help and support throughout the year.
