Pray (ACts) Read (Matthew 7:15-8:1 focus v21-23) Message (Alan Burke) In my line of work I know lots of people, I interact with people daily when I’m out and about, in the hospital, in peoples homes and in many of the different things that I do. We all know lots of people and as we come to what Jesus says today these words should be terrifying to all of us, they should make us sit up and listen, to pay heed to what Jesus is saying because the type of people that Jesus speaks about here are not irreligious. These are people that called Jesus Lord, they did things in his name, but on that day it matters not all the things that they might think that they have done in the name of Jesus, here prophesy, driving out demons and preforming miracles, or for us good acts, good deeds, giving to the church what ever it may be. None of these things matter even our profession of faith, what matters is Jesus’ profession. For some of us it will be “‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.” (Mt 25:34) but for many of you he will say “‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoer!” Throughout the scriptures one of the messages that reverberates is the need for repentance, it was the message that was given by God to his people in the Old Testament time and time again, the need of repenting, turning back to him otherwise they would face destruction. John the Baptist arrived to prepare the way and he called people to repentance for the forgiveness of sins (Mk 1:4), Jesus came and did likewise, telling people “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdoms of God is at hand, repent and believe in the gospel (Mk 1:14-15), likewise the apostles called people to repentance (Acts 2:38). Have you repented? We don’t earn salvation by repentance nor does it mean we are perfect if we repent for anyone who claims to be without sin deceives themselves (1 Jn 1:8), rather to repent means that we are looking to what Christ has done, we know nothing but the blood of Jesus can deal with our sin, for we are sinners, each and everyone of us, unless we repent of it then there can be no salvation and Jesus will say to you, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoer!’. Let us all examine our hearts this day, for false assurance will lead you to hell. It is entirely possible no matter how religious one may think that are that they will spent eternity in hell. We need to know that Jesus gives this warning for all of us so that we may consider the state of our own souls so that we do not face a lost eternity. Scott and I have no idea who reads these devotions, we do not know how far they reach, you might know us, about us, but what matters most of all is are you known to Jesus, do you know him? If you known by him then you will hear “‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.” (Mt 25:34) but for if you do not to you he will say “‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoer!” Pray (acTS) Sing WSC Q52. What are the reasons annexed to the second commandment? A. The reasons annexed to the second commandment are, God’s sovereignty over us, his propriety in us, and the zeal he hath to his own worship.
